The day I discovered the space that now houses my tiny nursery about three months ago, was a thrill! I had always thought there was a small space here based on the structure of the house; however, my husband disagreed. Despite this, I still knew there had to be something there. But I envisioned a filthy, smelly, unfinished space with insulation everywhere. I also thought the space might have been subject to extreme temperature ranges: Hot in the summer and freezing in the winter.
One evening, my curiosity got the better of me. I just had to find out what was there! I removed the very top, triangular piece of tongue and grove wall board. It was in a very hidden spot, so if I damaged the piece of wood there, it would not be much of an issue. We live in a post and beam house and the roof slant exists there, which is why that piece was triangular-shaped. Once removed, I obtained a flashlight and peaked inside and confirmed that there was, indeed, a space there. But the opening was too small to view it well enough. So, I removed the next piece of tongue and groove wall board and peaked in with my flashlight. When I did, I was totally amazed and so very thrilled! The child in me was jumping for joy! The space was so much better than I had thought it would be! It was a bit larger than I had envisioned! There was also a light fixture present, and the floor was actually a finished floor! I wondered why the previous owners sealed it up with no entry to it! Someone must have used this space at some point! Why else would there be a light fixture present? And why would it be finished?
I carefully removed the remainder of the tongue and groove wall board from that wall, taking care not to damage any of the boards. Here it is, all opened up! A very exciting moment for me!
After a good vacuuming and cleaning, I started moving in my Reborn and silicone doll collection with their clothing and accessories!
Over the last three months I have made some drastic changes to my new space! My tiny nursery! I have added some modern amenities, many vintage items and a miniature dollhouse display on some shelves I made in the wall! Here it is today!
About a month ago, I placed a Govee WiFi hygrometer sensor to track the temperature and humidity over time and have been very pleased with the results to date! But I wasn’t surprised because we have a larger space just like this one on the opposite side of the house and it, too, has always remained stable with regard to temperature and humidity throughout the year.
I had to ensure that there were no drastic temperature or humidity changes because I have many collectible items in there now and I don’t want them damaged over time. Even when it got close to 100 degrees outside, with the sun beating down on this section of roof, it only hit 80.1 degrees for a short time. Yes, it got a bit too warm that day but overall, the temperature and humidity has been stable enough. We have forced hot air for heat and the duct comes through this area, which will produce enough heat to maintain an appropriate temperature, just as it does in our other attic area. So I am not concerned. But I will continue tracking over the winter months too, just to be sure all is good!
So, my tiny nursery is a well hidden secret!
Just some extra photos!
Wow, that's better hidden than I realized! I never would have guessed it was there at all!
