Dismantling My Tiny Nursery!

We recently purchased property in New Hampshire about one mile away from our son and his family for future retirement. But they cannot wait for us to move up there so we are starting construction! We already have our home picked out; a log cabin home! It will be beautiful! We’re not sure when they will be able to complete the construction. There’s a possibility it might be completed by the end of 2024 but it all depends on the weather and when the first snow arrives. At the latest, it will be completed by next spring around March 2025.

We’re not sure when we’ll put our house on the market. It could be as early as this fall depending on progress with construction before winter. We’ll have a better idea in the fall. If the contractor can have all site work done (driveway, foundation, septic, well) plus the main shell of the home completed and weather tight before the first snow flies, it will be done by the end of the year. Once the shell is up, all work is inside the home and can be completed regardless of the weather. If we sell our current home before it’s ready to move in, we’ll place our belongings into storage in New Hampshire and stay with our son and his family until our new home is complete. If they can’t get the shell up before snow arrives, then they’ll have to cap the foundation for the winter. The log cabin home is a lot so when it’s delivered, it will be placed into the basement. If they can’t get the shell up before winter, the kit will remain stored in the basement for the winter to protect it from the weather changes. In that case we would wait until next spring 2025 to sell our current home.

The log cabin kit comes with all of the logs, windows and doors with framing, roofing materials including the shingles, support beams, indoor wooden wall materials, etc. Everything that is needed to build the home. It does not come with the finished work items such as kitchen cabinets, appliances, bathroom fixtures, or flooring. We will pick out all of these items once the main shell is up; when they initiate the interior construction.

Just a few examples of what or new home will look like when it’s done!

We will have a nice walk-out basement below the deck, as shown in the photo below. But ours will be level with the ground and facing out view of the mountains!

In the meantime, I have initiated the process of selling items I don’t want to have to move, especially large items. I sold the largest item a couple of weeks ago; my pool table! I have been going through boxes and bins in the basement to throw things away or sell. I try to have a good load of junk for our weekly trips to the dump.

Today I decided to start dismantling and packing up my tiny nursery and, surprisingly, managed to get much further than I thought I would! I worked on it for a couple of hours before work and just worked on it for a couple more hours after work today. I am astounded that I was able to get so much done in just four hours! And I can’t believe how much stuff fit into one large box and one medium box! I stayed focused on taking down my miniature doll house display and other wall displays first. This was the most challenging work! Then I focused on getting everything I removed boxed up. Then I focused on getting as many vintage items as possible boxed up, especially the larger items.

Here is my tiny nursery before I started.

And my miniature nursery collection!

Here it is now! When I took the cute decals off I had to throw them away, of course. I was more concerned that the adhesive would be difficult to remove from wooden ceilings and walls but I was able to remove them with ease!

My miniature nursery doll house used to be on the wall next to my magnetic dry erase board. All of the work I did on this is gone! But I’m content with this! 👍

And my first two boxes are ready to go! I just cannot believe how much stuff I managed to pack into these two boxes! Amazing!

Once all of the rest of the vintage items are packed, I’ll work on packing up items in my Reborn collection (clothes, head bands, bottles, pacifiers, blankets, toys). I’ll take apart the white cube storage unit and pack all of it in with the clothes. I plan to hold off on packing up my Reborns and their little playpen. I love the outfits they have on right now so I don’t plan to change them into other clothes for a while. I also plan to remove the baby pad that is on the floor so I can pack that up. I thought about selling it but it might come in handy for my future nursery in my new home! I initially bought it for my grandchildren to use but they outgrew it quite a while ago so I had decided to use it in my tiny nursery. People are of willing to buy baby stuff unless it’s practically free. I don’t want to basically give it away and then, later, regret getting rid of it. But I still want to get it packed up for now. I just want to leave my Reborns out so I can continue to enjoy them until I know for sure when we’ll be moving to the new home! I’m thinking about leaving a few outfits out but packed into a bag that I can use in case I do decide to change their outfits at some point.

I plan to do more tomorrow before and after work. I think if I can get another 3-4 hours in, it will be done as far as I plan to go for now! If not, I’m pretty sure it will only take another couple of hours beyond that if the progress I make is as good as the progress made today! Very exciting!
